About me
I’m Angelique, and I proudly call myself a Plaaskind.
My days are a whirlwind of roles, filled with moments of mom guilt as I strive to balance the rewarding task of being a hands-on mamma to my incredible girl, crunching numbers at work as if I were a bachelor glued to the office, and completing my law degree with a dedication that rivals that of a full-time student. Sleep? It’s become a mythical concept, and I survive on a diet of coffee, champagne, and adrenaline, often thanks to my constant companion, anxiety. Amidst this chaos, my sanity is preserved through my passion for travel, indulging in extraordinary culinary delights, and treading the less-traveled paths of life. I invite you to join me on this wild journey.
My husband, a potato farmer turned businessman, who’s entirely convinced he married a walking passport stamp, eye-rolls deeply at every new “quick getaway” suggestion, never mind when I utter the words “I found cheap flights.” He swears he’s exhausted by my never-ending stream of travel ideas and world explorer dreams. But despite his dramatic sighs and vocal resistance, he always comes around, and once we hit the road (or the sky), he’s all in. We’ve gone from no plans to international boarding passes in under four hours, no jokes. He may act like he’s being dragged along (and let’s be honest, he probably is), but I wouldn’t choose a different travel partner even if I could. Somewhere between his “you’re crazy” and my “just trust me,” we’ve built a life rich with spontaneous detours, belly laughs, endless love, and a collection of family memories worth far more than any itinerary.
You might wonder about the name “Plaaskind.” It’s not just about farms; it’s about the person who forever embodies the spirit of the farm for me.
While I currently reside in the picturesque Cape Winelands, my roots are firmly planted in the Boesmanland of the Northern Cape. My childhood was a tapestry of moments spent on the back of Oupa’s bakkie, racing with cousins to claim the gate-opening honor, or running free with no boundaries in sight. Afternoons were dedicated to savoring freshly cut watermelon on Ouma’s immaculately manicured lawn, and summer nights meant sleeping on the most epic Christmas beds on that very same lawn, beneath a sky painted with the brightest stars, a spectacle reserved for the fortunate few.
While other kids were immersed in Mario video games, we were busy entertaining Kabouter, our pet goat, and taking refreshing dips in the farm dam. These are the memories I hold dear to this day, and each one features a special person: Oupa Ben. So much of who I am today is a reflection of who he was. My life is an album of countless memories, and my heart overflows with boundless love. Oupa Ben, you made my childhood unforgettable, and I will forever be your Plaaskind.
We may not own the fanciest house or drive the flashiest car, but our daughter proudly carries a passport stamped with more stories than most people’s scrapbooks. And to me, that’s what truly matters, not things, but experiences. Not perfection, but presence. A life lived fully, together.
Join me as I honour my family’s legacy and seek adventure in every corner of life. Let’s celebrate the beauty of the journey together, wild, messy, meaningful, and real.
